Imagine Walking Around the Maze

We will navigate through our maze as we make it.   We will be using the up, left, right, and down arrow keys.   Up will make us try to walk forward toward a room in front of us.   Left will make us try to walk left toward a room that is to the left of us.   Right will make us try to walk right toward a room that is to the right of us.   Down will make us try to walk toward a room that is behind us.

The cardinal direction (North, South, East, or West) we are facing will change whenever we successfully walk into a room by going in any direction other than forward.   This is just like in the real world where a person keeps heading in the same direction if they keep walking forward.   When a player begins a maze they are facing north.

If you have not already played a maze, it is highly recommended that you do.   It will help you understand what it is like to walk around a maze.   Just a few minutes playing the 'Filling Cube Spaces' maze should be plenty.   A simple 'double-click' on the 'Challenge Maze' file will launch the software.   The maze can then be selected after clicking 'New Game'.   A review of the relatively short Playing Mazes Pages is also recommended.

The Professional-Looking Map Plan

Making a mapped plan of any maze that will be built is important so that it is easy to figure out how to make 'entries' that will join all the rooms properly.

The Way I Usually Do It Map Plan

This image above was made in a graphic design program, but you can make a plan on paper or whiteboard like I did for this next image:

Map Plan of the Double Plus Maze on Whiteboard

This whiteboard is made from a roll of whiteboard sticker paper I put on some cardboard.   With whiteboard sticker paper rolls, you can easily make whiteboards of many different sizes.

Normally, you would make a map plan of the maze you wanted to build and then you'd have that plan to look at while you built the maze.   Since in this tutorial we are making the maze I planned, it is recommended that you keep a window or tab open with the maze map while you complete the other pages of the tutorial.   It will make completing the tutorial much easier.
